Toen Thar in korte tijd drie nummers had geschreven op zijn piano in de woonkamer besloot hij om het eens een keertje helemaal anders te doen. In plaats van zelf een scala aan instrumentenpartijen in te spelen vroeg hij aan bevriend pianist Thomas Dirkse om de pianopartijen in te spelen. Behalve zang en wat minimale gitaarpartijen werd er verder niets toegevoegd aan de opnames. Al snel ontstond het idee om op die manier een compleet album op te nemen, bestaande uit een aantal nieuwe nummers en een aantal nummers die al wat langer op de plank lagen.

Portrait bevat een twaalftal nummers die teruggrijpen naar essentie, eenvoud en puurheid. De muziek laat zich het best omschrijven als singer/songwriter met een donker randje.
